A High Lama’s Advice to Geshe Michael Roach

During the time of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lamas teachings in Tucson, Arizona, in September 2005, a teacher of Geshe Michael Roach, Gyumed Khensur Rinpoche Lobsang Jampa, from Sera Mey, advised Geshe Michael Roach that he should either disrobe or behave like a monk (in terms of his “consort” Christie McNally , his hair and other vows). Geshe Michael replied that he would “Think about it”.

The reason Geshe Michael Roach gives for not disrobing is:

“…if one emanation of Vajra Yogini told me that I should disrobe, I wouldn’t take it as literal, and I would never disrobe.”

Thus, in this case, Geshe Michael Roach is taking instructions from what he believes is his “Vision” of Vajra Yogini (his tantric deity) rather that his actual physical Guru, which goes against the general advice of the Tibetan tradition of Buddhism:

If we were to meet a Buddha we would think ‘This Buddha is higher than my Guru.’ This is a natural reaction, but Sadaprarudita saw countless Buddhas and still searched for a Guru.
